Baja California
Valle de los Cirios, Baja California — May 1997
An hour’s drive on Mexican Federal Highway 1 passed El Rosario takes you to Valle de los Cirios. The landscape is desert with occasional rock outcroppings and some of the largest cactus in the world. I simply refer to it as the redwoods of cactus. (Those who have seen redwood tress will know what I mean.) As you drive through, pull over and hike around the giant cactus; some of the cacti are so old that they have formed bark near the ground. It is truely spectacular.
