Wuyuan is a village endowed with rich ecological and cultural beauty eulogized by some as the most beautiful village in China. Although the accommodation and transportation conditions are not good in some places here, you can’t be too critical when traveling in this sort of tourist attraction, with well preserved ecological and cultural relics.

Wuyuan is located in the northeast of the Jiangxi province. With a forest coverage rate of 81.5%, Wuyuan enjoys an unscathed ecological environment. Wuyuan is the hometown of the famous philosopher Zhu Xi, the father of “Neo-Confucianism”. Here in Wuyuan, you can enjoy the elegant Hui Opera and charming tea making performances. The ancient architecture is another attraction in Wuyuan, where you can see unique walls, tiles and eaves.

Xiaoqi Village features elegant residences of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, tranquil and zigzagging lanes, paths paved with green cobbles, and dizzying ancient trees. It is one of the most charming ancient cultural and ecological villages in China.

First built in the year 787, Xiaoqi boasts many houses with a history of 600 years. These magnificent structures with their unique characteristics are precious treasures left behind by the forefathers of Xiaoqi.

The park for appreciating ancient rare trees in Xiaoqi has a collection of more than one thousand ancient camphor trees and firs. The park not only well demonstrates the ancient residents of Xiaoqi worshipping for green, but also beautifies the environment.

Qingyuan Village is the birthplace of Zhan Tianyou, a railway pioneer in China who lived during the end of 19th century. Brooks run through the village, and sheds are set up along aside these watercourses. Relaxing on a chair in one of these sheds, you may be unsurprised to hear that these chairs are known as “beauty chairs”. But it not just because of the beautiful scenery that is on display. The blissful relaxation that comes from putting your feet up is said to make people more beautiful. Sipping tea and chatting with the locals makes one feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of modern life

The Yu Family Ancestral Hall is located 30 kilometers northeast of the county of Wuyuan. The hall is a good example of the symmetrical style of presentation which was so popular during the Qing Dynasty. A forbiddingly unnatural style for some, it does admittedly create a magnificent and solemn atmosphere. The unique characteristics and fine craftsmanship of this hall have won it a reputation as a treasure-trove.

Likang village is an ancient settlement of the Li family. Surrounded by green mountains and blue water, Likang glows like a pearl in the azure sky. Residences dating from the Ming and Qing Dynasties can be found nestled against the mountains, and add further color with their pink walls and black tiles. Rivers run parallel with the lanes of the villages and bluestone wells are dotted along the local paths. Various wooden and stone bridges also catch the eye. Here in Likang, visitors can easily be charmed by this picturesque view, consisting as it does of rapidly flowing rivers, arching bridges and the local people themselves.

Rainbow Bridge
The town of Qinghua is located in the north of Wuyuan county. It is rich in tourist sites, but it is the rainbow bridge which is the most beautiful of these sites. Built during the Song Dynasty, the rainbow bridge earned its colors because of its shapely appearance. No tourist can be disappointed as this is one rainbow that you can see whatever the weather.

Hongguan village is famous for the Hui Ink and a thousand year old tree. As early as the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the village of Hongguan was famous nationwide for its high quality ink. The homes of some of the finest ink masters of those times have been preserved even until today. By the village brook stands the ancient tree. Its girth measures 3.4m and it is 26.1m tall. As for the exact age of the tree, this is no definite answer. By the tree is a temple, on the pillars of which hangs a couplet which reads “as we try to figure out the age of the tree, the world has been changing over the times.” The Chinese interpretation of this is that the old tree has witnessed many changes over the past centuries.

The Mandarin Duck Lake of Wuyuan is the largest roosting ground for mandarin duck in Asia. With clear water and green mountains, the environment is quiet and beautiful. As an ideal habitat for mandarin ducks, it attracts large number of mandarin duck lovers every year: in China, mandarin ducks are symbols of lovers. Boating on the lake and sharing the leisurely lives of the mandarin ducks, Wuyuan has a magic all its own.(Text by Liu Yudan)
