Beyond the tourist highlights, my favorite thing to do in the old town of Rhodes is to wander the back alleys and get totally lost. The old city is not too big, so one cannot get too lost, but it is still a maze, nonetheless, and lots to explore and find in the back alleys, including small shops, a hidden bar, local families that have lived there for eons and many cats.
One of the most iconic views of Rhodes, dawn on the Streets of the Knights. Come here any other time of day and this street is filled with happy tourists, local guides, scooters, shoppers, etc. Luckily, this morning, jet lag was on my side and I got here before everyone else, well, except for that one motor scooter parked up there on the left. But hey, nothing is perfect, right?
Not quite Rhodes, but related because we left Rhodes on the Blue Star 1 headed to Thira, Santorini. On the way we stopped in Kos for and caught this beautiful sunset. I hope to visit Kos for more time in the future. I had no where else to put this pic, so here it is!
If you are up in time, nothing beats an early-morning walk in the moat around the walls of the old city of Rhodes. You can go almost all the way around, except along the road next to the water, which is a little anticlimactic, especially if that is the last part of your circular journey. Still, totally worth it, but again, if you are up early, or it's near dust; it is too hot in the middle of the day.
