Thankfully, the era of the Great White Hunter is long past. Green
Hills Of Africa describes one of Hemingway's many safaris in Kenya/Tanzania
and it is little wonder that the wildlife in Africa has experienced
such a rapid decline in last century. Hemingway tries to imbue
the Safari with a romantic sense of valor, pitting man against
beast in a primal struggle to survive. In truth, the slaughter
described in the book is horrifying. Hemingway stalks rhinos,
lions, leopards, and multiple species of antelope as he blasts
his way through the wildlife of Africa. For the lover of animals
the senseless slaughter may become quickly tiresome. However,
Hemingway offers great insight into the culture of the early African
hunting Safaris. The magnitude of the slaughter is appalling,
but Green Hills Of Africa is valuable in understanding a significant
aspect of African history.
