Welcome To Kitimat!

Arrival At World Famous Kitimat

After countless nights spent by the campfire in Africa hearing about the infamous town of Kitimat, Chris and the Dutch finally made it. Running on fumes, the 4Runner pulled into Kitimat almost totally out of gas. Unfortunately, we arrived at dusk, too late to head down to the river to go fishing. That evening we unloaded the cars and readied our gear in preparation for an early morning fishing trip to the river

Dustin Instructing The Tourists

The next morning, before we could fish, we had to buy licenses for the fishermen. We ran down to Home Hardware, the fishing experts in Kitimat and met Nicole's friend Dustin. Dustin helped us with our licenses, then tought us how to tie a Kitimat Hoochie. Once our knots were completed, Dustin made us start again, this time in a race. Doctor Chris finished first, followed by Aren, and Todd failed completely. With our equipment ready, we left the store and found a quiet spot on the river.

First Glimpse Of The Kitimat River

In a hurry to start fishing, we braved the crowds at the lower Kitimat River and drove down to the Lower Dike. The people seemed to be congregating around the Fish Hatchery, so we found ourselves a semi-private quiet spot on the river. We backed the trucks up to the river, broke out the poles, and started fishing.

Aren's First Cast! It's a Pink Salmon!

Aren walked down to the river and cast out his hoochie. It hit the water and in a matter of seconds Aren had a strike. Unbelievably, Aren had hooked a salmon on his first cast! As you can tell my his ridiculous pose, Todd was stunned by Aren's luck.

Todd Running To Net Chris's Pink

As Aren began reeling in his fish, another salmon took Chris's bait. Chris and Aren both had salmon on their lines, on the first cast of the trip! Unbelievable! Chris pulled his fish up to the beach first, so Todd ran with the net to land the fish. With the fish in the net, Todd hugged Chris, then raced off back to Aren. Aren brought the fish up to the beach, but the hook came free when the fish was on the rocks. The fish turned out to be a Pink Salmon, which we were not allowed to keep.

Chris With His Fish

Chris rinsed off his fish and discovered that, unfortunately, it too was a Pink. Forgetting to pose with his fish, Chris released it back into the river.

AC And Marieke Watching The Commotion

AC didn't have quite the enthusiasm for fishing as his dad, so Marieke and AC played in the sand on the beach. After the initial excitement wore off, a pair of seals swam in from the Douglas Channel and began to fish in the river just in front of where we were casting. With the arrival of the seals the fish stopped biting and our luck ran out. Turning our attention to other forms of entertainment, we sat back, let our hoochies spin in the river, and enjoyed a frosty beverage
